The biggest winter storm in years forced us to postpone our January winter classic by a week after the State of Emergency and severe weather. Typically, New Jersey sees warmer days and thawing after a storm, but this time, temperatures stayed below 20 degrees, and nothing melted. Luckily, with clear skies ahead and Mantua Township keeping the roads in great shape, the race took place one week later.

While some registered runners understandably opted out of the freezing conditions, most participants arrived ready for the challenge. There was even someone racing in shorts and a tank top—unsurprisingly, he was quick! True to its spirit (and name), The Chili Run went ahead, though not without difficulties. High snow drifts, narrower road shoulders, subzero temperatures, strong winds, and a work trailer buried under snow meant things were far from normal. Still, as the saying goes, “the show must go on!”

After living in New Hampshire for more than three decades, I’ve grown used to harsh winters, but this time my biggest concerns were the equipment and technology. I kept the generator indoors where it was warmer and ran it throughout the week, made sure all electronics stayed inside, replaced and charged batteries as needed, and had a portable propane heater ready. Setting up the tent wasn’t possible; and I had to bring extra weights to keep the finish line arch and flags securely in place. Just to illustrate how cold it was—room temperature water set at the finish line around 7am had begun freezing by 10am.

Despite the conditions, over 150 participants joined the race and crossed the finish line with big smiles, especially after enjoying some chili. Everyone appreciated being outdoors, and we are grateful to those who braved the elements. As the saying goes: “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”.  Consequently, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many saying things like, “That wasn’t so bad,” and “Glad we did it.” We’re gearing up to host the 2nd Chili Run this Saturday with more than 200 participants, and we can’t wait to welcome the dedicated runners and walkers once again!
