When I was young, I remember my father running a race or two, though I don’t recall ever attending one. He would leave early and return a couple hours later—Dad was always on the move! Watching kids finish this month’s Elf N Cocoa 1 Mile Fun Run left me amazed, as children as young as four years old eagerly lined up at the start and threw their hands up triumphantly at the finish line. Much credit goes to parents and other role models who have brought these children to races since they were babies; it’s clear they’ve absorbed the whole race experience. As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and these kids were certainly making the most of it!
The running industry has evolved dramatically over time, creating more welcoming experiences for all ages. Races offer chances for exercise, accomplishment, and enjoyment, and children often participate directly or cheer family members on at the Finish. Either way, children are becoming a central part of race day activities—and that’s exactly how we like it!
